چکیده

We pursue an analysis of the relation between qualitative syllable parses and their quantitative phonetic consequences. To do this, we express the statistics of a symbolic organization corresponding to a syllable parse in terms of continuous phonetic parameters which quantify the timing of the consonants and vowels that make up syllables: consonantal plateau durations, vowel durations, and their variances. These parameters can be estimated from continuous phonetic data. This enables analysis of the link between symbolic phonological form and the continuous phonetics in which this form is manifest. Pursuing such an analysis, we illustrate the predictions of the syllabic organization corresponding to simplex onsets and derive a number of previously experimentally observed and simulation results. Specifically, we derive not only the canonical phonetic manifestations of simplex onsets but also the result that, under certain conditions we make precise, the phonetic indices of the simplex onset organization change to a range of values characteristic of the complex onset organization. Finally, we explore the behavior of phonetic indices for syllabic organization over progressively increasing sizes of lexical samples, thereby concomitantly diversifying the phonetic context over which these indices are taken. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Issues in Banawá Prosody: Onset Sensitivity, Minimal Words, and Syllable Integrity

Three aspects of Banawá prosody (Buller, Buller, and Everett 1993, Everett 1996a,b) have been argued to present significant difficulties for metrical stress theory. First, Banawá stress is sensitive to the presence or absence of syllable onsets; second, Banawá tolerates monomoraic feet yet requires a bimoraic minimal word; and, third, it seems to employ mora-based footing that is free to ignore...

Implications for Word Recognition of Phonetic Dependencies between Syllable Onsets and Codas

Acoustic cues to a given phonological contrast may extend over long stretches of time. Thus, recent findings show that syllableonset /l/s are slightly longer and darker in syllables with voiced codas, compared with voiceless ones, and that, in certain conditions, these acoustic differences play a role in word recognition. It is argued that coda-dependent variations in onset /l/s contribute to e...

Development of complex syllable onsets: evidence from durational measurements

This paper investigates the emergence of complex syllable onsets through measurements of their duration compared to the duration of corresponding singleton syllable onsets. The results show that there is a difference in the progression in syllable onset duration that is dependent on subject age and onset structure.

Syllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis

Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists.  In this paper we study  the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old  Persian  (O.P)  to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each  of these  languages,  and then  analysed  according to the syllab...

English and French speakers' perception of voicing distinctions in non-native lateral consonant syllable onsets

English and French listeners were tested on discrimination and open-response categorization of laryngeal contrasts in three non-native syllable onsets differing in gestural complexity, in particular in the phasing between laryngeal and supralaryngeal articulations. All onsets involved a lateral, which was combined with a coronal stop in two contrasts. Results support the view that syllable onse...
